Seattle Art Museum’s “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors” Exhibit
Today the Seattle Art Museum’s newest exhibit, “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors”, is opening! The exhibit features Kusama’s famous “Infinity Mirror” rooms. The rooms are lined with mirrors and the reflections of the sculptures and lights make you feel like you’re in a never-ending room.
Yayoi Kusama began “utilizing mirrors to transcend the physical limitations of her own productivity and achieve the repetition that is crucial to her paintings and Accumulations” in 1965. In her 65 year career since then, she has not only created several infinity mirrors of kaleidoscopic rooms, she has also created “mesmerizing and intimate drawings, her early Infinity Net paintings which grow on a canvas like cell formations, and her surreal sculptural objects covered with strange growth formations.”
The Seattle Art Museum is only the second museum in the United States that this specific exhibit has visited so far on its tour. The exhibit includes “more than 60 works on paper, sculptures, and large scale paintings from the 1950s to the present” in addition to the infinity mirrors that are the exhibit’s titular feature and make it so unique.
To get a brief look at the exhibit, The Seattle Times created a 360 video experience:
While the exhibit doesn’t close until September 10th at the Seattle Art Museum, tickets are already sold out. As reported by The Seattle Times, there are “a very limited supply of day-of tickets” left for those who show up at SAM in the mornings. Even with a ticket, the ticket entrance times are timed because of the large demand. The SAM website says there will be lines throughout, but people should plan to spend 1-2 hours inside the exhibit. Incredible art exhibits are in the Pacific Northwest all the time, but this one especially is drawing so much media attention and excitement.
